Brando stars in The Wild One and predates even James Dean as the first film rebel. An interesting aside, his rival motorcycle gang is named “the beetles”.
The film seems to function in tandem with The Catcher in the Rye as a “how to” guide on cool and rebellion, but as you watch the scenes today something is glaringly apparent; the music is missing. The rebop is fine of course, but there’s no real rebellion in it. The “voice” is missing.
It’s a great film, but it almost serves as a cry for help too. The young need a music of their own, one that matches their attitude.
Within a few months that will start to change…
